Finding the Best Dental Insurance Plans

Finding the best dental insurance for your needs can be a difficult process. After all, there are so many different providers to choose from, it’s not always easy to know whether you’re really making the right decision. We’ll explore some of the things you need to consider before you choose a dental insurance plan, and hopefully help you to pick the perfect provider for your needs.

Group or individual?

First off, you should check to see whether you’re covered through your employer. There are many different types of group dental insurance plans, but they may not always be best suited to your needs. A group plan with low monthly premiums, a high annual maximum and strong coverage for basic, preventative and major procedures might be worthwhile, but if the group dental plan that your employer offers is too expensive and doesn’t provide comprehensive coverage, it might be a better idea to take out an individual plan instead.

Types of dental insurance plan?

Once you’ve figured out whether to go for a group or an individual dental insurance plan, you need to work out what type of dental plan suits you best:

  • PPO

PPO dental plans let you choose a dentist from a large network, giving you a large degree of freedom when it comes to your dental care. However, their monthly premiums are usually higher, and you’ll have to pay deductibles for your dental treatment. Most people choose PPO plans because of their flexibility. If you travel frequently or you’re not rooted to a city or an area of the country, a PPO dental plan probably makes the most sense.

  • DHMO

DHMO dental plans tend to be cheaper than PPO plans, but they aren’t anywhere near as flexible. Generally, you’re required to choose just one dentist to receive dental care from. They are probably the best dental insurance plans for people who are expecting to stay in the same place over a long period.

  • Discount

Discount dental plans aren’t really insurance because you pay everything yourself, but by participating in the plan you receive discounts on your dental care from selected dentists. If you maintain high standards of oral health and don’t need to use your dental insurance very much, discount dental plans can be a much more affordable option.

Most of all, it’s important to work out what kind of dental plan is best suited to the needs of your lifestyle:

  • Do you have children?

If you have children, you may be better served by taking out a family dental insurance plan. If you do so, make sure that orthodontic care is provided, otherwise, you could be left in an unfortunate situation should one of your children need braces.

  • Do you need specialist dental care?

Specialist care (i.e. orthodontics, cosmetic, etc.) is not provided by many dental insurance plans. If you think that you might need more specialist treatment, get a plan which provides more extensive coverage options. Remember, it may end up being more expensive than standard dental insurance plans.

  • Do you have pre-existing conditions that need treating?

Many dental insurance plans will not provide coverage for pre-existing conditions. However, some plans do provide this coverage. This means that you’ll have to shop around extra diligently to find a plan which is right for you.

  • Do you work in a dangerous environment?

If you work in a dangerous environment (i.e. construction, logging, factory etc.) you should make sure that treatment arising from an injury at work is covered by your plan. Be aware, some plans won’t cover workplace dental injuries, so make sure that you check the exclusions.

Before you choose a dental insurance plan, work out where your priorities lie and find a plan which caters to them. Finding the best dental insurance is often time-consuming, but it’s well worth the investment in the long run.
