The International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) was founded in 1972 with the purpose of providing an education regarding dental implants to dental care teams so their practices may better serve their patients. The Congress is not only the world's largest dental implant organization, but it's also the world's largest provider of continuing dental implant education. The association is made up of general dentists, periodontists, prosthodontists, endodontists, orthodontists, oral surgery specialists, laboratory technicians, auxiliaries, industry representatives, researchers, faculty members, pre- and post-doctoral graduate dental students and members of the general public.

The ICOI strives to substantially advance the science and quality of practice in the field of implant dentistry. The ICOI achieves this by supporting clinical and basic research and reporting the findings to its membership, interfacing with related companies and organizations within health care and manufacturing, promoting high standards of personal and professional ethics, recognizing the achievements of its members and providing accurate information for existing and potential patients. All of this is done in the interest of fulfilling the ICOI's mission of serving the needs of its members and providing them with high-quality education to better serve their patients.

Component and Affiliate Societies

The ICOI's network includes 65 worldwide "component" and "affiliate" societies, which provide regionalized education to well over 25,000 members. A component society is one in which all or a large percentage of members are also members of the ICOI. They include societies such as China's Chinese Stomotological Association, Spain's Sociedad Espanola de Implantes and the United States' Association of Dental Implant Auxiliaries. An affiliate society is one in which a smaller number of members are ICOI members. These include societies like the Canadian Society of Oral Implantology, the Australian Society of Implant Dentistry and the Caribbean Osseointegrated Dental Implant Society.

Implant Prosthodontic Section

The Implant Prosthodontic Section of the ICOI offers practitioners and laboratory technicians a focused environment for implant restorative education. All members of the ICOI, dental specialists as well as generalists, are included. The entire implant team benefits from annual meetings dedicated to implant prosthodontics, training courses, dental treatment planning forms and patient consent forms.

Implant Dentistry Research and Education Foundation (IDREF)

The IDREF was established in 1993 to help with the ICOI's mission and to foster high standards of research and education for all dental professionals. Through the IDREF, the ICOI raises needed funds to support these goals. To date, the IDREF has contributed over one million dollars to implant research and education worldwide.

The ICOI publishes Implant Dentistry, a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal designed to keep ICOI members abreast of the latest research and clinical concepts in the field of implantology, as well as upcoming ICOI activities and those of their component and affiliate societies. The ICOI also publishes the Glossary of Implant Dentistry, a clinical source and practical aid for all dentists trying to keep up with the scientific literature.
