June 28, 2013 - Over Half of New Yorkers Are Unhappy with Their Dentist

LOS ANGELES, CA (June 28, 2013) – New Yorkers are known to be especially tough critics and new research shows that this toughness carries over to how they evaluate their dentists. According to a new 2013 survey conducted by 1-800-DENTIST, the nation’s most-trusted provider of personalized dentist referrals, over half (54%) of all New York respondents are unhappy with their current dentist. This figure is significantly higher than the national average.  

Widespread dissatisfaction with their current dental care provider may explain why nearly half (46%) of New Yorkers surveyed report not having a regular dentist. This number stands in stark contrast to national figures showing that only 31% of survey respondents don’t have a regular dentist. Nationwide just 43% of patients surveyed say they are unhappy with their current dentist. 

1-800-DENTIST’s survey shows that people are more likely to look for a new dentist in New York than elsewhere in the country. When New Yorkers look for a new local dentist the top factors they consider include:

• Insurance plans the dental office accepts

• Selection of dental services provided

• Location and travel distance

• Dentist’s trustworthiness

• Quality of the dentist’s work

Surprisingly, financing options are less of a concern to New Yorkers than people in the rest of the country. Less surprising is the fact that New Yorkers are more likely to relate going to the dentist with pain than their national counter parts. This contrasts with survey finding that shows that people in California are the least likely people in the country to associate pain with dental visits.   

The survey found it’s not all gloom and doom when it comes to New Yorkers and dental care. Despite national statistics showing dental emergency visits are on the rise, emergencies are not the primary reason New Yorkers go to the dentist. Maintaining good oral health is important to them. Dental health advocates will be happy to know that two thirds (67%) of New Yorkers surveyed continue to visit their dentist two or more times a year despite new research showing that once a year is enough for most people in good dental health.
