LOS ANGELES, CA (July 20, 2013) – Citizens of the Golden State lead the nation in their positive view of the dental profession and their surprisingly strong commitment to going to their dentist regularly. A recent survey conducted by 1-800-DENTIST®, the nation’s most-trusted provider of personalized dentist referrals, found that 75% of Californians see a dentist for a checkup at least once a year. The national average is 66%. Only 23% of Californians report that they are overdue for a dental appointment and have not had a checkup in more than a year.
In accordance with Californian’s healthy dental habits, survey results also show that Californians hold positive attitudes toward going to the dentist. Californians are less likely to associate pain with going to than their national counterparts. When asked about their attitude toward their dentist, Californians ranked dental care being expensive on the top of their responses, followed by the importance of taking care of their oral health. However, Californians ranked the statement “dentists try to sell unnecessary things”, much lower on a list of influencers toward choosing a dentist than national respondents. These results suggest that Californians view dentistry as expensive but worthwhile, and they are less likely to feel that their dentists are selling them services they do not need.
Overall, 70% of Californians have a regular dentist and 64% of them are happy with their current dentist. Dentists in California should be proud about providing quality care in a field where positive feedback is less often voiced and strong customer relations and loyalty are more difficult to maintain. In contrast to California, the same survey returned less than favorable attitudes for dentists in New York.
Californian dentists should celebrate these favorable survey results. Californian dental patients are measurably more satisfied than their national counterparts. Clearly, dentists must be doing something right on the Left Coast.
