University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry develops socially and ethically sensitive dental professionals.

The University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) is Michigan's largest private Catholic university. The University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry opened its doors in 1932 and is committed to developing technically and diagnostically skilled, scientifically-based, socially and ethically sensitive dental professionals. UDM also prides itself on its commitment to the community. UDM's dental students, staff and faculty are actively involved in providing dental care to those most in need.

Academic Programs & More

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry offers the following academic programs:

Dental Hygiene -- Students can work toward either a certificate or a Bachelor's degree in dental hygiene.

Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) -- UDM's DDS program offers a patient-centered educational approach built on a strong foundation of biomedical, clinical and behavioral science knowledge.

7-Year DDS/BS Program -- This traditionally 8-year program provides exceptional high school students with the chance to pursue a combined undergraduate and graduate degree.

Program for Graduates of Foreign Dental Schools -- Dentists trained outside the U.S. can gain clinical skills and knowledge of U.S. dentistry. Successful completion of the program fulfills the educational requirements for licensure eligibility in all states.

Advanced Education in General Dentistry -- This program provides general dentists with the advanced knowledge and skills needed to perform evidence-based comprehensive oral care on a range of patient populations.

Postdoctoral Program in Endodontics -- This 24-month program trains dentists to develop the skills and abilities needed to become endodontists.

One of the UDM School of Dentistry core values is life-long learning. UDM plans evidence-based, clinically relevant continuing dental education courses for dental health professionals. Courses expose participants to new dental productstechnology, materials and available to improve patient care.

UDM School of Dentistry is also actively engaged in dental research, working closely with dental companies to develop and evaluate new materials and devices.

Patient Care

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry provides comprehensive patient care for free or very low cost to the Detroit community, particularly the underserved and the elderly. UDM School of Dentistry provides dental care at two different locations: on the UDM campus and at the University Health Center. The UDM School of Dentistry's hospital-based clinic is actually the largest of any dental school in the United States and provides fourth-year dental students with a unique opportunity to work with medically compromised patients.

Specialty care available through the UDM dental clinics include endodontics (root canal therapy), orthodonticspediatric dentist care and oral surgery for wisdom teeth removal.
