Texas A & M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry

Texas A&M Health Science Center’s Baylor College of Dentistry stresses hands-on experience in their Dental Simulation Center and community outreach by providing low-cost dental care.

Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry (HSC-BCD) in Dallas has provided thousands of dental professionals with a quality education for over 100 years. Named for Baylor University, which it was affiliated with for most of its history, HSC-BCD became part of Texas A&M in the mid-90s.

The Baylor College of Dentistry has earned a strong reputation in the dental community, combining education, research and community service to best prepare students for the challenges they'll face as dental professionals.

The College offers the following degree programs:

Doctor of Dental Surgery -- A DDS degree is awarded to dental students after successfully completing the 4-year program.

Bachelor's Degree for Hygienists -- Dental hygienists obtain a BS degree after two years of study. Texas A&M graduates the largest number of dental hygienists with a bachelor's degree in the state.

Postdoctoral Degrees and Certificate Programs -- Students who have completed their DDS or DMD training may choose to further their studies in a number of dental specialties.

Post-Graduate Degrees -- Post-graduate students can apply for an MS in several areas of study. Dental students may choose to combine their DDS with a PhD program, and a MS/PhD program is also available. Students may also obtain an MD degree through a joint program in Oral Surgery.

Continuing Education Courses -- The Health Science Center's continuing education courses help dental professionals meet dental board statutory mandates.

Research & Facilities

As a higher-learning institution committed to excellence, Baylor College of Dentistry provides its students with state-of-the-art equipment and the latest advancements in dental technology. Dental students practice techniques in the Dental Simulation Lab, where they work on mannequins in a dental operatory environment. At one of only 22 such labs in the United States, students gain valuable experience in a real-life setting before moving on to live patients.

Between the Center for Craniofacial Research and Diagnosis, the Oral and Maxillofacial Imaging Center and the Baylor Health Sciences Library, students and faculty have a plethora of educational resources to enhance their knowledge. HSC-BCD also provides outstanding research opportunities, attracting top dental students to its residency programs.

Community

As the largest oral health care provider for the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, the Baylor College of Dentistry is an integral part of the community. Students and faculty participate in the College's various community service programs, which includes providing oral health care services at clinics, public schools and children's hospitals. The College provides low-cost dental care for HIV/AIDS patients, and fourth-year students participate in a one-week rotation in a public health care environment. Texas A&M University also produces the nation's only weekly dental health program, "Dental Health Check."

As part of their commitment to community outreach, Baylor College of Dentistry encourages kids in underserved populations to pursue careers in dentistry. Through the Bridge to Dentistry: Awareness to Graduation program, high school and college students participate in a summer program geared towards improving the student's chances of gaining acceptance to dental school. HSC-BCD also offers a year-long program for college students, as well as educational programs for grade school students.

Patient care for the general population is provided at a reduced rate in one of the school's clinics. Following a screening appointment, accepted patients are assigned to a dental student for care.
