Stony Brook University, a long-time staple of higher education, established its School of Dental Medicine in 1973. Since then, the School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook University has gained an excellent reputation preparing students for careers in general practice, specialty practice, public health, teaching and research fields.
As part of the Health Sciences Center at Stony Brook, the School of Dental Medicine provides its students with the clinical, biomedical and behavioral knowledge needed to perform at the highest level of the dental profession.
Dental Programs
The School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook University has several competitive degree programs:
Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree -- Classroom learning, laboratory work and clinical education prepare students to provide the best in general dental care.
Post-Graduate Studies -- Professional dentists may choose to continue their studies in a three-year specialty program. Certificates are awarded to the following dental specialists upon successful completion of their respective programs: Orthodontist, Periodontist and Endodontists.
Dental Care for the Developmentally Disabled -- The School of Dental Medicine offers two dental fellowship positions focused on patient management of the developmentally disabled.
MS or PhD Degree in Oral Biology and Pathology -- Students interested in research opportunities may choose to continue their studies through the School's graduate programs.
Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program -- Resident positions are salaried research and teaching positions. Pediatric residents are expected to perform a wide range of dental care and community services.
General Practice Residency -- Students may choose a one- or two-year GPR Program. They receive advanced training in areas of hospital dentistry, including prosthodontics, special needs patients and sedation dentistry.
Stony Brook University's dental school also has a Dental Assisting Program to prepare students for much-needed positions in the dental office. This 10-month, full-time program prepares its students for licensure to become certified dental assistants in the state of New York. Students receive academic and clinical training to perform various duties in a dental office, and graduates go on to become dental chairside assistants, dental receptionists and dental laboratory assistants.
