You can’t see it, but it’s there
Gum disease is an infection of the gums caused by a buildup of bacterial plaque. Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease affects a majority of the population. As gum disease is often painless, many aren’t even aware they have the disease.
All the gum’s a stage
Gum disease progresses through several stages. The first stage, gingivitis, is often marked by bleeding gums. Without periodontal treatment, periodontitis will result, leading to receding gums and tooth loss.
Don’t become a statistic
See a dentist at least every six months and practice excellent oral hygiene to prevent periodontal disease. For advanced cases, your dentist may refer you to a periodontist for gum disease treatment.
