Established in 1892, the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine is one of the oldest dental schools in the nation. But despite its long and rich history, the school's current curriculum is based on modern ideas. The Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine provides dental students with real world training through their clinically oriented, hands-on programs.

Students at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine learn in small groups that simulate a dental practice, work with practicing dentists through their Preceptor Program and take courses in practice management to prepare them for running a business. They also gain valuable clinical experience through the University's Healthy Smiles Sealant Program, visiting schools throughout Cleveland to perform dental exams and place dental sealants on children.

Programs of Study

DMD Program -- At the Case School of Dental Medicine, professors believe that clinical knowledge is based on a firm foundation of the basic sciences. The DMD program offers an evolving curriculum to provide students with a complete, comprehensive dental education. Upon completion, this four-year program awards dental students with a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree.

Dual Degree Program -- The joint DMD/MD degree program is the first of its kind, designed to integrate primary care aspects into the practice of general dentistry. This new, five-year degree program is offered through the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine and School of Medicine.

Graduate Studies - The graduate program prepares professional dentists to enter their respective fields as dental specialists, researchers or teachers. Graduate students can receive certificates in any of the following dental specialty fields:

- AEGD (Advanced Education in General Dentistry)

- Endodontists

- Oral Surgery

- Orthodontist

- Pediatric Dentist

- Periodontist

- Restorative Fellowship

EFDA (Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary) Program -- Certified Dental Assistants and Registered Dental Hygienists receive training in the art of restorative dentistry. Graduates of this challenging course will be capable of placing dental sealants and restoring teeth with tooth filling treatment on their own.

Facilities

Students of the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine receive their training in the new Dental Simulation Clinic, which uses the most advanced dental education technology. First and second-year students are integrated into a virtual reality setting to practice dental techniques. They start by using real dental equipment in the simulation labs, where their work is recorded, analyzed and displayed on the monitors of computerized DentSim units. Students also gain experience on the Kavo units, which simulate a patient in the dental chair. It's here that students complete their restorative training.

These valuable teaching tools allow students to gain clinical experience and increase their confidence before moving to the dental clinics at the Case School of Dental Medicine. As patient care is a significant part of each student's training, student clinics are open to the public at a reduced rate. Case Western University also has a Faculty Dental Practice, Pediatric Clinic and Orthodontic Clinic.
